Last night’s performance could go a long way in determining Regin’s fate with Ottawa.

The 23-year-old is on the bubble, battling for a spot on the roster and is trying to show he can play full-time at this level. He has moved up on the depth chart, but could get caught in the numbers game at cutdown time.

Regin scored the Senators’ first even-strength goal in more than 10 pre-season periods only 58 seconds into the second. Breaking in on a 2-on-1, he took a pass from Fisher and beat Montreal goalie Carey Price on the stick side to give the Senators a 3-1 lead.

“(Regin) was much, much better. He was responsible defensively, but he was also creative,” said Clouston. “He didn’t sacrifice his defensive play for creativity and obviously his linemates played well.”
